The body generates and uses a large number of plasmalogens. When the body can no longer produce as much plasmalogen as it consumes, the condition is known as plasmalogen deficit. It can occur due to increased oxidative stress, which destroys plasmalogens8, or as a result of reduced production caused by ageing and prolonged xenobiotic exposure.
